Have you picked a New Year’s resolution?
At our house we are not huge on resolutions… but we’ve been meaning to clean up our family’s eating habits, so we are taking the New Year as an opportunity to refocus on healthy foods… and get rid of all the left over junk from the holidays.
As I type, I am inhaling the last crumbs of my favourite treats… mmmm smarties. Tomorrow morning, whatever is left goes in the garbage.
We have a specific plan. For 100 days, we will be eating only whole foods. Lots of fruits and veggies. Only whole wheat/whole grain (no white flour). Dairy is fine, but it has to be in it’s natural form, no added sweeteners. Any boxed or packaged food has to be real and contain less than 5 ingredients. Only natural sweeteners, such as maple syrup or honey can be used, in moderation. Drinks can be coffee, tea, milk, beer, wine or real juice, in moderation (except water). We should strive to mainly eat organic foods, pasture raised meats.
I didn’t come up with this idea, it’s from 100 days of real food, one of my current favourite places to find new recipes.
In case you haven’t read my blog before, I have 3 adorable kids (in my opinion : )), 3 years, 1.5 years and 4 months old. … I have no idea how this will go with such little ones.
The 2 oldest kids, 3 and 1 years old, have been eating cookies, chocolate, chips, packaged cereal daily. My 1 year old will eat just about anything, and loves fruit and beans, so I’m not worried about cutting out the junk for her… my 3 year old on the other hand, has a sweet tooth that rivals mine, and will opt out of eating for days, waiting to for the pizza or ice cream that might be coming in a week.
I’ll try to post a few times a week on how it’s going. Wish me luck!
